Durham County announces a funding opportunity to establish a competitive microgrant program for community nonprofits that provide essential services to enrich the lives of youth and support their social, emotional, mental, and physical health. This grant program is designed to leverage the expertise, experience, and trusted relationships of community organizations to strengthen outcomes for youth across Durham.
A total of $500,000 is available. Grant awards will range between a minimum of $40,000 to a maximum of $50,000. The County anticipates selecting 10-12 awardees through this RFP. The project period is 12 months. The County anticipates that awards will be announced in December 2026, with grant agreements executed in January 2026; actual dates will depend on the number of submissions achieved.
Program Categories
Durham County will consider proposals for projects that fall within one or more of the listed categories below. Respondents should not submit applications for projects that do not align with one or more of the listed categories. Proposals with projects that are determined to be outside the scope of the categories below will not be scored.
I. Youth Social-Emotional and Mental Health Services. This category includes projects that will create and/or expand safe, culturally-affirming, and trauma-informed supports that contribute to the social-emotional and mental health of youth ages 4-24 and their families. Proposals may focus on the promotion of social-emotional and mental health and positive childhood experiences, on strengthening protective factors that prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), or on response to ACEs, including addressing substance abuse issues, supporting domestic violence survivors, and suicide prevention.
II. Youth Enrichment and Recreational Activities. This category includes projects that enhance recreational opportunities and general well-being for youth in Durham. Proposals should expand access and remove barriers to youth enrichment programs like afterschool and summer programming. Funds can support a broad range of enrichment activities, including art, recreational and/or sports activities. The potential grants may also strengthen current programming or expand a new program offering. Applicants must be current providers of youth enrichment programs; partnerships with other groups are welcome.
III. Youth Academic Supports. This category includes projects that promote educational opportunities and support academic achievement for youth in Durham. Proposals should expand access to learning opportunities through initiatives such as afterschool and/or summer programming, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning activities, tutoring services, practical skill‑building, or other activities designed to enhance academic growth and development. Proposals may include funding to reduce participation barriers for youth; however, all applications must include direct programming or services.
Eligibility
- Applicant Organizational Status. Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status are eligible to apply for funding. Government agencies (including local educational agencies), institutes of higher education, individuals, businesses (Sole-Proprietors, Partnerships, Limited Liability Corporations, and Corporations), or any company or organized group that is not a non-profit will not be allowed to apply.
